Family Fun in Saskatoon: A Weekend Itinerary for Kids & Parents
My days of being spontaneous were over when I had kids! When we travel to other places, it is the same thing; I need a game plan! So, I made a weekend itinerary for all those planners like me; I hope this helps!
Accommodations
I highly recommend staying at the Travelodge Hotel by Wyndham Saskatoon when you come to Saskatoon. It has a huge water park, a kid's pool with a spray pad, themed rooms (like a Space Room, Race Car Room and more), and a restaurant on site that makes delicious pizza! They also have poolside rooms, which are great for coming and going to the pool. If you are looking for something downtown, I recommend the Sheraton Cavalier or Delta Hotels by Marriott Saskatoon Downtown. Both have great pool options for the kids, including waterslides!
Friday Evening
After a day of travelling, I know I am always exhausted. So, for the evening, spend it at the hotel! Let the kids swim the night away- the pool is open until 10:00 pm! While they are running up and going down the water slide, sit in the hot tub and relax. Once they are hungry, order room service and get some pizza to the room. They have a great special that offers two pizzas', 1 Pop and a giant cookie pizza for dessert! Once everyone has had enough swimming for the night, get a good night's sleep (which won't be hard from all the swimming) and get ready for a full day on Saturday!
Saturday- Morning
Head to Boomtown Café for a tasty brunch! Located right on Boom Street, the café offers everything from breakfast to lunch to pies; there is something for everyone! Their cinnamon buns are one of the best in Saskatoon; I suggest having one!
Once everyone is stuffed, it is time to explore the Western Development Museum! Enjoy roaming around Boomtown, which takes you back in time. Saskatchewan-inspired stories from the 1910s to the present day are featured. Look at different vehicles, trains, old stores, and more!
Saturday- Early Afternoon
After a morning of adventures, continue the fun with a stop at Mar's Mini Golf! Mar's Mini Golf is a 3D glow-in-the-dark miniature golf course! It is so cool inside; you must check it out! The underwater and pirate theme features all kinds of props and obstacles that are so fun; my kids loved it! The course is 18 holes and offers florescent graphics throughout! They also have food, drinks, and ice cream available! And yes, for those wondering, I got a hole-in-one!
Saturday- Afternoon Snack
Once you finish your golf round, walk over to Darkside Donuts for a snack! My kids ask for Darkside Donuts once a week. They love going in and checking out all the fun flavours and unique kinds of donuts. Our favourite is the classic vanilla dip with sprinkles, but as I said, they offer all sorts of different kinds, and we like to test out all the fun flavours!
Saturday- Late Afternoon
After indulging in some delicious doughnuts, head to the Nutrien Wonderhub and let the kids burn off all their energy at the Children's Museum! The Wonderhub is seriously so cool with all the bright lights, fun and engaging activities and the fact that it is 100% dedicated to kids! My kids love the Cosmic Commotion, a giant structure where kids can climb and swing on the massive play structure. They also love the air pressure tubes where you watch your ball go in all different directions and then shoot out of a slot to try and catch it! They also have Toon Town, an area full of different imaginary play fun (including a farming area, a stage, an ice cream shop and more!) Don't forget to head down to the "mines!" The kids get a hands-on sense of what it is like to work in the mines in Saskatchewan! There is also a closed-in toddler area, a creation space, and so much more! The Nutrien Wonderhub is a must on your visit!
Saturday-Supper
After a day of exploring, you and your littles are going to work up an appetite! There are a lot of great places to eat with kids, so it depends on what the family is feeling. A couple of our favourites are tacos at Shelter (and some great local beer for the parents!), take a drive out to the Berry Barn and indulge in local Saskatoon Berry items, or head to Aroma Resto Bar and let your kids make their pizzas (so fun!) Check out my other blog with a list of some more of our favourite restaurants!
Saturday-Evening
Depending on the season you visit, there is often a sports game that you can enjoy! Saskatoon has some great local sports teams, like the Saskatoon Blades (hockey), Saskatchewan Rush (lacrosse), Saskatchewan Rattlers (basketball), and a lot of great sports at the University of Saskatchewan! We often have at least one sport every season, so make sure to see what fits your visit! Once you are back at the hotel, enjoy an evening swim and water slide before bed!
Sunday-Morning
Once everyone is awake and ready to go, head down to the hotel restaurant, Fixin's Homestyle Eatery, for a breakfast buffet! They have something for everyone. One of my children had a doughnut, oatmeal with sprinkles, and bacon; she was living her best life!
Once everyone is fueled for the day, head out to Wanuskewin for the morning. Wanuskewin is a National Heritage site celebrating and educating Metis and Plains First Nations Cultures. There are over 6000 years of history on the site! Enjoy touring around the exhibits and art galleries, walking along the trails or walking out to the bison. Look out and view all the beautiful bison. Their daily program offers different educational opportunities like dancing, tipi building, guided tours and more! There are some great interactive learning opportunities and a HUGE park outside that my kids also loved!
Enjoy lunch out at their restaurant after a morning of exploring. They offer various options while showcasing traditional Indigenous flavours like Bison Stew, Three Sisters Chili, Bannock, and more (they also have a kid's menu!) Don't forget to try the Iced Muskeg Peach Tea—it is my favourite drink and is so refreshing!
Sunday- Afternoon
Before you head home from your weekend in Saskatoon, take a trip to Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo. This is a great option to tire out the kids before a car ride home! The forestry farm has some great animals to check out. Our favourite is the wolves, bears, zebras and meerkats! There are also many other animals to check out! Within the zoo, there is a big park for the kids to enjoy before heading home!
As I said, there is so much to do in Saskatoon, and depending on what season you visit, there are different outdoor activities to try as well. Here are some seasonal blogs to help you plan your next trip to Saskatoon. I can't wait to see how your family enjoys Saskatoon. Be sure to tag us on our socials and enjoy your visit!
