GTNT Presents: Mary of Patuanak

Event December 7-15
Time Various

Join us for the World Premiere production of Mary of Patuanak written by Bruce Sinclair.

Mary of Patuanak is a story mirroring the birth of a sacred child but only with Indigenous characters set in Saskatoon and Patuanak, SK. circa 1985. Mary, a unique Dene woman is studying at the University in the Native Studies department and is mentored by Willow, a Mohawk woman who is trying to guide her through her studies. Mary also is a street person who pushes a grocery cart down 20th Street helping others, sharing poetry and humour among the downtrodden. She is struggling with the dream world and a Dene man who appears in the dream and seeks help from Maggie, a Nakawe elder to help her understand why these dreams are so powerful. In her travels she meets Joe, a carpenter, who falls for her and a love affair ensues. Along the way, Mary realizes she's pregnant and prepares for the birth of the child in the north where she is originally from. In the story, three wise ones from the University find out about this ceremony that is occurring in Patuanak and link it to the return of Mary to her community. The whole journey is detailed by mahkesis a disc jockey at Red Skies, a community radio station.
