Workshop | Ukrainian Beading w/ Ivanna Dyedkova

Event Saturday, June 22, 2024
Time 9:30am - 12:30pm

Join Ukrainian master beader for a masters beading workshop, where participants will make a traditional Ukrainian beaded collar necklace or sylyanka. The word sylyanka comes from sylyaty = to string beads, and its plural form is sylyanky. This netted collar necklace can range in width and is typically created with a single needle method. The motifs on sylyanky are geometric in nature because of the technique of netting. This workshop will get you well on your way to completing your own sylyanka! Beaders who do not finish their collar necklace during the workshop can join Ivanna and Vanessa Hyggen for the Sunday beadhive to finish!

Edmonton-based artist Ivanna Dyedkova was born in Chervonograd city in the Lviv region of Ukraine. She lived there most of her life before immigrating to Canada in 2002 with her husband and two daughters. Ivanna attained her masters degree as a Technical Systems Engineer at Lviv Polytechnic National University and began her financial accounting career in Canada, but art has been a passion of hers for as long as she can remember. Her interest began at the Children’s Fine Art School in her hometown where she attended drawing and oil painting classes. Since then, Ivanna has been beading, sewing, writing pysanky, embroidering, crocheting, and knitting.
