Shevchenkomania!
Shevchenkomania! celebrates the enduring legacy of Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s national poet and a timeless symbol of freedom, identity, and resilience. Timed to overlap with Shevchenko’s birthday on March 9, Shevchenkomania! explores the profound impact of Shevchenko’s poetry and art through the lens of Ukrainian creativity.
The exhibition draws from the Ukrainian Museum of Canada’s vast collection of artworks and handicrafts depicting and honouring Shevchenko—from embroidered portraits to vibrant paintings, intricately carved woodwork, and folk art—revealing the deep reverence Ukrainians hold for him as both a cultural icon and a beacon of hope.
The exhibition also adds a touch of irreverent humour, with a few playful depictions of Shevchenko that contrast with the more profound themes of Ukrainian identity and heritage.
Through his remarkable story—from humble beginnings as a serf to becoming a celebrated poet and political dissident—Shevchenkomania! highlights why Shevchenko remains a powerful touchstone for Ukrainians and how his vision of a free and united Ukraine continues to inspire.
