Spotlighting Sustainable Saskatchewan Whisky
Black Fox Farm & Distillery, located a short distance outside of Saskatoon, is among the country’s most well-known and well-respected craft distilleries. Their ethos is to share the bounty of Saskatchewan, with each bottle they produce acting as an authentic love letter to the prairie terroir.
I recently learned about Black Fox’s foray into sustainable whisky production after they announced the release of their new sustainable spirits while at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28. This new venture is an exciting step forward for Canadian whisky.
Nurturing the Land, One Dram at a Time
For me, sustainability isn't just a buzzword; it's a commitment. So, discovering that Black Fox isn't just talking the talk but also walking the walk is incredibly inspiring. Black Fox CEO Barb Stefanyshyn-Cote is on a mission to not only transform the whisky world, but to improve the state of the planet while she’s at it. That’s something I can toast to!
The Best, Sustainable Whisky
I’m a self-confessed whisky lover (I’ll imbibe an Old Fashioned any day), and am incredibly passionate about protecting our planet. The idea of a whisky distillery near me reusing 95% of the water in its distillation process, integrating geothermal cooling, and planting trees by the thousands—it's nothing short of amazing. It's not just about making whisky; it's about creating an ecosystem where every drop tells a story of sustainability.
Transparency in Production
Black Fox COO John Cote's emphasis on transparency has also struck a chord with me. He’s recognized the importance of grounding their sustainability practices in science. And, he’s willing to acknowledge imperfections and continuously improve. It's a commitment that goes beyond the distillery walls and can be tasted in every sip of their carefully crafted spirits. It’s refreshing to see this level of transparency.
Raising a Glass to Tomorrow
So, here's to Black Fox Farm & Distillery! Being able to enjoy an experience at a distillery near me that's creating waves globally in the field of sustainable whisky production is such a treat. Next time I enjoy an Old Fashioned—made from only the finest Black Fox whisky—I’ll be savoring not only a great whisky, but remembering their story of sustainability, and their passion for the beauty of our Canadian prairies.
