Kid-Approved Eats: Family-Friendly Restaurants in Saskatoon
Sometimes, when life gets busy and neither my husband nor I want to cook, we say, "to heck with cooking!" and we head out to enjoy a meal at one of Saskatoon's fantastic restaurants. When the kids were younger, dining out felt like more trouble than it was worth. But now that they're older, we love exploring the city's dining scene together. I asked them to share some of their favourite spots (that aren't McDonald's or Costco food court), and here are their top picks!
Shelter Brewing Company
Our family adores Shelter Brewing Company! This nano-brewery, nestled in downtown Saskatoon, has a relaxed and welcoming taproom. Minors are welcome until 7:00 pm when accompanied by an adult. As craft beer enthusiasts, my husband and I appreciate having a great place to enjoy a well-crafted beer while dining with the kids. Shelter offers a Mexican-inspired menu featuring tacos, burritos, and more. While there isn't a kids' menu, the affordability is a bonus—tacos are just $4 each! We typically order a couple of baskets of fresh chips and guacamole, salsa, and a variety of tacos, then share everything family-style. In the summer, you can enjoy their pet-friendly patio (see others pet-friendly patios here). Make sure Shelter Brewing is on your list for your next family dinner!
Cohen's Beer Republic
Cohen's Beer Republic, located in the Riversdale area, is another family-friendly gem. It is a fun mix of pub, bar, and restaurant vibes, making it an excellent spot for a casual outing. They offer daily specials, including beer and burger nights, $5 off appetizer nights, and on Sundays, kids eat free with an adult order—a perfect way to save on the little ones' meals! The kids' menu features creative and funny names like "I'm Not Hungry" (chicken fingers and fries) and "Can I Play on Your Phone?" (grilled cheese and fries). The kids get a kick out of the names! They also bring out colouring sheets to keep them entertained while you wait. With a selection of local beers, fun cocktails, and mocktails, Cohen's is a must-visit for a family meal.
Aroma Resto Bar
Aroma Resto Bar, located in the Delta Downtown Hotel, is a hidden treasure for families; it's not exclusive to hotel guests. If you're considering travelling to Saskatoon with your family or planning a staycation, the Delta offers a fantastic water slide and pool area. But if you're just seeking a great family dining experience, Aroma is ideal. They feature a Mini Chef Pizza special every evening (except Wednesdays), where kids can create their own Woodstone-fired pizza for $15 (which . They get to choose three toppings, a drink, a side of fries or veggies, and finish with a scoop of ice cream! The restaurant also provides colouring sheets and other kid-friendly meals if pizza isn't on the agenda. The friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere make Aroma a favourite for our family dinners.
Fuddruckers
Fuddruckers on 8th Street is a staple for family outings. It's not just a restaurant, but a hub of fun, with Ruckers Arcade, Putt' n' Bounce Mini Golf, a rock-climbing wall, and batting cages! Known for their world-famous burgers made fresh in-house, Fuddruckers offers various kid-friendly meal options, each coming with fries, a drink, a Ruckers coupon, and a cookie for dessert. After getting your meal, you can add any number of toppings to your burgers—lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeños, Fudd cheese sauce, pickles, and more. Don't forget to check out the bakery for delicious cinnamon buns, ice cream, pies, milkshakes, and more. The kids often sucker me to grab an extra ice cream treat. For some added entertainment, ask your server for colouring sheets, usually hidden to the side but perfect for keeping the kids occupied while you wait.
The Berry Barn
The Berry Barn, located just 10 minutes outside Saskatoon along the picturesque river, is a beloved spot for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Be advised that it closes for the winter but reopens in the spring. Beyond its delightful restaurant, the Berry Barn offers a range of activities. In the summer, you can enjoy a petting zoo, an ice cream shack, pedal carts, a mini train, a greenhouse, a pumpkin patch, and more. The cozy, homey atmosphere makes dining there feel special. I personally love their perogies and sausage. The kids' menu features all-day breakfast and non-breakfast options with colouring sheets. The toppings bar for pancakes and waffles is a hit with my kids, who load up on whipped cream, Saskatoon berries, strawberries, chocolate sauce, and more! The Berry Barn is also known for its Saskatoon Berry creations, like: Saskatoon Berry pie, lemonade and chicken wings. Make sure to spend some time exploring the grounds before or after your meal!
These are just a few of our favourite dining spots. Other noteworthy mentions include Amigos Cantina for a great drink and nachos, Boomtown Café at the Western Development Museum for a meal followed by museum exploration, Hometown Diner is a great brunch location, and Las Palapas, perfect for a summer patio or cozy winter dining with a Mexican flair!
