Dakota Dunes Brewery Series: A Must-Try Dining and Cultural Experience!
It's an unforgettable event that brings together so many unique elements, and I'm excited to share my experience with you and encourage you to plan a trip for yourself!
Take a Short Drive
For those who may not know, Dakota Dunes Resort is located about 20 km outside of Saskatoon on the traditional Whitecap Dakota Territory. With over 150 modern and spacious rooms, a dining restaurant and lounge, a casino, Indigenous cultural experiences, and an 18-hole golf course in the summer, there's something for everyone. You can also enjoy the top-floor pool and fitness center, offering stunning views of the prairie landscape through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Offers and Cultural Experiences
Dakota Dunes Resort always offers seasonal packages and cultural experiences! Winter activities include snowshoeing, stargazing, and roasting bannock over a fire. Enjoy fat biking, Indigenous games, and canoeing on the South Saskatchewan River in the summer. Each experience offers adventure and fun without straying too far from your room. Learn more about their offerings here.
This winter, Dakota Dunes Resort launched a new experience—the Brewery Dinner Series, where they collaborate with local craft breweries from across Saskatchewan. The dinner we attended featured 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, a local brewery in Saskatoon (and home to one of my favourite beers, The Ticket—highly recommend!). Each event is unique, with beer pairings tailored to the craft brewery's selections.
9 Mile Legacy Brewing
The story of 9 Mile Legacy Brewing is truly inspiring! Run by Shawn and Garret, whose family farms are "9 miles" apart (clever, right?), their generations of neighbours have worked together for over a century. They started homebrewing in a garage before expanding their operations. Despite their growth, they still consider themselves nanobrewery, allowing them to take risks and innovate. They've collaborated with businesses and events like the Jazz Festival, Odd Couple, Saskatoon Berries, and more! You can now visit their 402 21st Street West storefront to get merchandise and beer and meet the team. Congrats to 9 Mile for all their success—I can't wait to see what's next!

Brewery Dinner Service
Our first course was fried bannock—soft, warm, and perfect. It also included a Resolution Quinoa Salad—tri-colored quinoa, goji berry, dried blueberry, nuts and seeds and paired with the 9 Mile Legacy Eagles & Bulldogs, a Hazy IPA named after the owners' hockey league rivalry. It was a fantastic start!
The main course was Braised Lamb Shank with buttermilk sage polenta, celeriac puree, rapini, smoked tomato jam & rosemary demi glaze—let's just say it was incredible. The beer pairing was 9 Mile Legacy's Hybrid Vigour, an Amber Ale named after the strength of Saskatchewan's diverse people. The pairing was perfect.
Make sure to save room for dessert! We were served Yogurt & Sour Cherries—a yummy frozen yogurt, vanilla bean, sponge toffee, warm sour cherries, dark chocolate & coco nib, it was simply delicious. It was paired with 9 Mile's Angus Stout, a Dry Irish Stout named after one of the founders' grandfathers. This stout has earned gold at the Canadian Brewing Awards, and when paired with the dessert, the combination of chocolate, stout, and frozen yogurt was perfection. I'm not typically a fan of dark beers, but this pairing won me over!
Cultural Performance
This had to be one of my other favourite parts of the evening. After dinner, the guests had a cultural presentation. We had the privilege of enjoying a powwow dance presentation with drums performed by local artists. I am always fascinated by powwow dancing; it is such a beautiful dance to watch. I love the Regalia and Headpieces, the colors, and the stories they share about them. They also opened it up to the audience for questions, and the dancers took the time to share their knowledge and discuss Truth and Reconciliation. It is always a privilege to have the opportunity to learn and to have knowledge shared. What an incredible way to continue learning about the truth and growing together in reconciliation.
Plan to Spend the Night
After dinner, I highly recommend staying overnight at the resort. This was my first time staying at Dakota Dunes, a gorgeous property with many amenities. Be sure to check out the pool, which has breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The hot tub is incredibly relaxing, too. Although we didn't participate in any outdoor activities due to the -50°C temperatures that weekend, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure (just be prepared for the cold!). They're also building a Dakota Dunes Thermal Spa, set to open in 2026, complete with saunas, pools, and relaxing areas—I can't wait to experience it!
We also spent some time at the casino. We're not big gamblers, but we had fun trying our luck, watching sports on the big screens, and finishing the night off at the pool relaxing in the hot tub!
For those travelling with pets, Dakota Dunes is pet-friendly! They provide a dog bed, food and water bowls, and a treat bag—how amazing is that?
Final Thoughts
Before heading home, don't miss brunch at Moose Wood Home Fire Grill. Inspired by local heritage and culinary traditions, the restaurant offers a variety of delicious options. This experience was a unique, well-thought-out evening, perfect for a date night, a group of friends, craft beer lovers, or anyone who wants to enjoy something unique. From the warm atmosphere to the delicious food, drinks, and cultural insights, you'll feel at home from the moment you arrive. There are three more Brewery Dinner Series events coming up (for now), and I highly recommend attending one for a fantastic night at Dakota Dunes Resort!
